Award SpeechesAward Speeches – Unlock the key to making yours perfect
Award speeches are not just about the Oscars, Arias or any other big televised ones. You may be presenting badges for your scout or guide group. Or you have to honor the employee of the month for your organization. Maybe you are a teacher and it is your turn to hand out the student prizes during assembly. Whatever your position, and whatever the situation these 7 steps should help you.
Prize giving is a way of saying thanks and giving recognition but they also have another purpose… to motivate. If all sales persons try to win sales person of the year, the company will have some great sales. Similarly if all students want to be, 'most improved student', imagine the delight of the school. So yes presenting awards is about acknowledgment but it also has another powerful use. Considering this, you need to think about the feelings this presentation should aim to invoke. Here are some:
Do you think just saying a few words about the award and then announcing the winner will evoke any of those feelings? Here's what you need to do.
Have you heard of the saying, 'you always want what you can't have'? Well one way to make people to want this honor is to tell them how difficult it is to achieve. This might be due to the infrequency it is handed out. Or The hard criteria you have to fulfill However don't make it sound impossible. You still want it to be achievable.
People love to belong. Mention previous winners and how today's recipient will now be a part of this chosen group. Let them know that belonging is an earned privilege and one to be proud of.
Don't just think about financial rewards include others such as:
If you have ever watched game shows, you should know what I mean when I say build suspense, television hosts are a master of this. Rather than telling you straight away who has won the prize they give out little clues. You too could use this same approach in your speech. Try and get the audience thinking as to who is going to win the award. Start with some general clues that describes many people. Gradually become more specific Until you are left with only a few contenders Using this style not only builds suspense and anticipation but it also gives you the chance to tell the audience about the recipient qualities that won him or her the award. Don't give the game away by glancing at the winner during the speech not until you are ready to say their name.
After the build up it is time to announce the winner. Ensure you know where they are sitting so you can look at them when you say their name. If they have an unusual name, practice saying privately so you pronounce it correctly. When they accept the award shake their hand, or give a congratulatory kiss. In all the excitement don't forget to hand over the certificate or award. If possible allow some time for a photo to be taken. Even if there isn't a professional photographer in the audience, there is likely to be a friend or family member wanting to take some. Is the winner expected to give an acceptance speech? You may wish to whisper a reminder. Likewise if an acceptance speech is optional, quietly ask them if they want to say a few words. If they decline smoothly move onto concluding your speech. However if they are giving an acceptance speech, keep an eye on the time, and the mood of the audience to make sure they don't speak for too long.
You need to smoothly lead into the closing. A great way to end it is to ask for a round of applause once again for the winner. A Free Award Speeches Sample can be found in the Speaker's Handbook, sign up now for your copy.
