Best man speeches can be great and a real highlight of a wedding reception.

On the other hand they can be awful, with the audience wishing the speaker would hurry up and sit down and stop boring them to death.

What can you do to make sure your speech impresses the guests and more importantly the bride and groom.

You need to know what you should include, what to leave out, how to make it interesting, funny but not hurtful, and how to present it well.

• Firstly you will need to do some preparation, sound obvious but you would be amazed at how many people just try to sit and write a speech with out doing any planning. The benefits that are gained from a little bit of forethought certainly outweighs the extra time it might take. • An important step is to jot down some topics, or ideas of what you might want to speak about. At this stage you should write down anything that comes into your head, you can edit this list later on, so don't worry if you think it looks long. So record what ever pops into your head. • When considering ideas you have probably thought about including a story. Stories and speeches can work well together just ensure you have thought through the story you want to tell. It is too easy to include a story just to get some laughs, particularly if you are aiming for a funny speech , without considering how appropriate it is. Now I am not saying don't include anything funny but just be careful. Remember a wedding day is a special occasion you don't want to ruin it.
• As a bestman you will certainly have many duties to perform and it is so easy to overlook things. You have probably already made a checklist of all the things you have to do, I suggest you also include a bestman speech checklist to remind you not only of the things you should do but those that you shouldn't
• Of course no best man speech would be complete without a toast. And like most things there is a correct way to propose one.
