Demonstration Speech Topics and Ideas

Find advice and ideas for demonstration speech topics.

Have you been asked to give a presentation to explain or show how something works but not given a topic?

If you are you stuck for ideas, or looking for inspiration have a look through the following list.

Do not worry if you cannot find the perfect theme straight away, sometimes your brain needs a little time to allow creativity to develop.

Have you got any visual props, that you could create a speech about?

The 'How' Question

A simple way of finding ideas is to ask yourself lots of ‘how’ questions. Answering such a question often requires a physical explanation, with examples and aids. This provides you with a great opportunity to give a talk explaining the answer.

Some Ideas

How to do something such as:
  • How to make meringues
  • How to apply make up
  • How to chat up girls
  • How to write a report
  • How to change a tire
  • How to carve a scary jack o lantern
  • How to give birth drug free
  • How to say no
  • How to build a coffee table
  • How to collect outstanding debts
  • How to use chopsticks
  • How to propose
  • How to teach a dog to stay
How does something work such as:
  • How does evaporation occur
  • How can a car run on vegetable oil
  • How do spectacles improve eye sight
  • How can regular eating help you lose weight
  • How can ships float
  • How does hydroponics works

Choose a topic to suit your audience

In your talk, you will be teaching: helping people to learn new skills and understand procedures.

Before deciding on a topic analyse your audience. Teaching people how to make a dog stay would be hopeless if they are afraid of dogs. You would be better to teach them how to overcome their fear of dogs.

Sell It!

Think about the title of your presentation. ‘How to input sales invoices’ does not sound as much fun as ‘Banishing the Sales Invoices Blues’. Ensure your audience are excited right from the start. A more responsive audience will be easier and more enjoyable to teach.

Final Thoughts

If you find you are answering more ‘why, when, or what’ questions your speech may be more about providing facts and being informative than demonstrative, is this what you want?

A good demonstrative speech should include visual aids.
