How to prepare a wedding toast

There are 3 parts to making a wedding toast:

Verbal-Action: Say something to honor the bride and groom.
Agreement-Action: Raise your glass ( in your right hand). The wedding guests will follow your lead and raise theirs, usually saying To the bride and groom or To Brad and Ange. There may be the optional clinking of glasses.
Imbibing-Action: Sip (not drain) the toast glass. This completes the toast.

What is the correct etiquette for the toasting the bride and groom?

During the toast the wedding guests and best man should be standing.

The bride and groom should remain seated, not raise their glasses nor sip their drink.

Give a sincere wedding toast, by making eye contact with the bride and groom.

There should be no applause.

Raise your glass in your right hand.

What is in the glasses for the toast?

At a wedding, there is usually champagne or a sparkling wine specially bought for the occasion.

However, alcohol is not compulsory, fruit juice, punch or other soft drinks are fine.

I do not recommend using water, it is not very festive and some people even associate it with bad luck.

What about empty glasses?

There should be no empty glasses for the toast.

It is considered bad luck at a wedding to toast with glasses that are empty.

It is the responsibility of the best man to ensure glasses are full.
