Free Graduation Speeches Advice

Free graduation speeches advice, tips and information to create an unforgettable speech.

Creating a unique and memorable graduation speech is simple if you follow some basic guidelines.
  • Appeal to all your audience, which includes academic staff, parents, friends and your fellow graduates. Use topics that will interest nearly everyone.
  • Forget generic speeches, they are too general and do not make a lasting impression.
  • Include some class specific details and stories such as names of teachers, awards won, events participated in and events that involved many of the graduates. Including details that your fellow classmates would have experienced is a great way to develop a common bond and rapport with your audience.
  • A friendly audience will be supportive. However, this friendship can disappear if they begin to doubt your sincerity. Maintain your sincerity, avoid clichés and quotes and just be yourself and use your own words. Use poetry with caution.
  • Giving a speech can be a daunting prospect but unless you are great actor, the key rule to remember, is to be yourself. It is a great honour to be chosen as valedictorian or graduation speaker, but you were chosen for being you. If you can tell a joke, then consider giving a funny graduation speech but if you can’t, don’t even attempt it, use a style that reflects you.
  • If you are including jokes, make sure most people will understand them. Remove inside jokes or stories that only the minority will get. Similarly don’t alienate people by using jargon, inappropriate language and topics. Motivate them.
  • A graduation speech will appear effortless when it flows smoothly from beginning to end. Start with a formal opening where you welcome and thank guests. Stories and antidotes should be in the middle section. Finish with a clear ending

Follow these free graduation speeches guidelines and tips and you are well on the way to creating a unique and good graduation speech.
