Funny Speeches
Funny speeches can be a rip roaring success or a total flop and embarrassment to all involved.
Why be funny?
If you can get your audience to laugh with (not at) you early on in your speech you have caught their attention.
If they are laughing, they are likely to start to relax and be interested in what you are saying. This is want you should aim for, particularly if you are giving a persuasive speech as they should be more receptive to any arguments or ideas you are suggesting.
Humor can also highlight significant points. - A funny story is a great way of illustrating key points, and your audience will find it easier to remember them.
Funny Speeches Top Tips
- What type of person are you? - If you are naturally comical, then giving an amusing talk might be perfect for you. However, if telling jokes and being witty does not come easily don't include them.
- Focus on your speech topic – remember you are there for a reason, whether it be to give a best man toast, or demonstrating how to do something, so do balance your wit with good content. Do not let your presentation turn into a stand up comic routine.
- How funny is it ? – Just because you may find something entertaining, your audience may not. Test your humorous stories and antidotes on similar people to those who will be in your audience beforehand. What was their reaction?
- Know your audience – have you analyse your audience? Knowing what type of people will be listening to you will make it easier to present appropriate humor. After all you don't want to offend anyone.
- It's the way you say it. - Have you ever tried retelling a joke only for it to fall flat? The key to successful humor is in your skill and timing. Practice that funny punch line until you get it right.
- Be original- do not use some one else's jokes or funny stories unless you have their permission, better still, develop your own.
