Good Persuasive Speeches -Method 3

Good Persuasive Speeches follow one of 3 Approaches

Aristotle suggested 3 ways of persuasion. If you look at anyone who presents good persuasive speeches you will find they use a combination of the three approaches. You can find a great example of this in this blog.

Here we are taking a brief look at Logos. It is pretty straight forward, but there are some disadvantages.

Logos is required when your audience has the need for logical argument.

If your listeners require such an approach you need to guide them step by step with rational arguments, to the statement you are trying to make. You need to know your subject matter very well.

Choosing this style for your presentation can work well but you do need to be aware of people's emotions. If emotions are allowed to get out of control, any facts can be lost under the chaos of feelings.

Be prepared for lots of questions. Audience members who like to hear the facts often ask a lot of questions.

Therefore make sure you do some solid research and can back up your claims. You only need one incorrect statement or fact to undermine your whole presentation.

The Logos approach can take longer than the other two approaches, Ethos and Pathos, because you have to deal with each question and objection. This may be fine if you have a small audience of one or two, but if you have a whole room of people be prepared for a long night.

If you do have a large audience, ensure you are in control. You may not have the time or knowledge to answer every question or objection but you can be prepared for this by having some detailed handouts available. Or even better arrange for a follow up presentation.
