Your reasons for speaking can generally fall into one of four categories:

  • To Persuade
  • To Inform
  • To Celebrate
  • To Remember

Think about the conversations you've had today.

  • Do they fall mainly in one category?
  • Is there one or more categories that you feel less confident in.
  • How would you benefit if you could master all categories?

For example

Think about your home life. Has you ever had a conversation with another family member and come away thinking that didn't go well?

  • You may have been trying to persuade- asking for more allowance, getting a child to tidy a room.
  • Or to inform- explaining the rules of the house
  • Celebrating- a family birthday speech.
  • Remembering- reminiscing about the past.

Think back, were any of the outcomes not as good as you hoped for. Did you come away from the situation thinking 'why do I bother'?

So what can you do?

There are a few options open to you

  • Do nothing- hope that you will naturally improve. Yes, this might seem like a good idea but think about all the things you are missing.
  • Join toastmaster- a great place to learn lots of public speaking skills, however they may not be convenient.
  • Get The Speaker's Handbook – A free online guide full of advice and tips to become a better speaker.

Hopefully by now, you should agree with me and millions of others that the importance of public speaking is not overrated.
