Persuasive Speech Method 1 EthosPersuasive Speech Method 1 of Aristotle's Approach
Ethos, is one of the Aristotle's 3 methods of persuasion, the other 2 are Pathos and Logos. For members of your audience who favour the ethos approach, they will base their decisions on credibility and reputation. So it makes sense to work on this approach to gain their trust and eventually win them over to your way of thinking. Still not convinced this works? Think about this. Maybe you or someone you know has bought a book, joined a club, subscribed to a newsletter group or similar based on someone else's recommendation? Many people do, which is why there are so many successful bloggers and affiliate marketers. How about Oprah's book club. Authors desperately want their book to be on her list for she has built such a solid reputation and trust with her viewers, she only has to mention something and it sells out. So how does this help you? Well you need to build up a solid reputation with your listeners Firstly, establish your credibility. This can be created through an introduction speech. If you are not being introduced, tell your audience why you are an expert. No need to be pompous, just be honest, for example: ' You may be wondering who I am, why should you be listening to me. Well I work for Jo Brown industries in the department that builds these microchips and I have seen…..; Even better than a good introduction speech, is having a good reputation precede you. Of course unless you have a similar status to Oprah it is unlikely that you will be able to convince your audience solely on your credibility. Therefore, you should also consider the other two persuasive speech methods.
