Retirement Poem Advice

Should you include a retirement poem in your speech?

Including one in a speech is probably not a good idea. They are usually lengthy and this could make your speech very long or you will use up all your time so you won’t be able to talk about anything else.

There are many different topics you could include instead that would make it more personal.

Remember this is your chance to express how you feel about the retiree. Wouldn’t he or she rather hear about the wonderful asset they were to the company?

If you really do want to include poetry consider picking a small section and include it as a verse.

Custom Made ?

If you do want to include a verse, firstly find a poem. If you are unable to find one for free, consider having one custom made. Explain that you only want to use a verse in the speech but all of it elsewhere at the party, such as the card, invitations etc.

To make it unique and specialized you will need to provide some details such as:

  • Name of retiree
  • Stories
  • Achievements
  • Type of employment (firefighter, accountant)

Ensure that it compliments the message and style of your speech, although a positive and happy retirement poem will fit in well with any type of speech.

If you do include one, ensure you allow enough time for the essential retirement toast.
