Preparing To Write A Speech

Before you write a speech, you need to be organized. You should have some idea of what you want to write about, and how a speech is structured

1. Start by Brainstorming.

Brainstorming is a great way to get some ideas.

Firstly write down anything you can think of that you want to include. Don't worry if you have lots of words or phrases, the more the merrier. You will choose the best ideas later.

Do not panic if you can't think of many initially, ideas will come at the strangest of times. It is a good idea to keep a notepad or some other recording device handy so you can always jot down your thoughts whenever they arise.

The earlier you start, the longer brainstorming time you have. So once you know you have to give a speech, start thinking.

2. Sort Your Ideas

By now you should have some words written down from your brainstorming session.

You need to sort your words into categories. This will keep you organized, letting you concentrate on writing rather than searching for lost or misplaced information.

By The Way - how are you writing your speech?

Are You Using Pen and Paper ?
Allow a whole page for ideas on each category, you will be surprised at how quickly you will fill that page.

Photocopy Important Pages imagine how you will feel if you lost/damaged all your notes.

Or Electronic Devices?

If you are using a pc/ laptop or any computerised device make sure you do regular backups. Trust me ( I speak from experience) you will not be happy if you lose all your valuable work

3.  Sort Your Categories Into 3 Sections

Most basic speech outlines have 3 sections

  • Beginning - opening lines
  • Middle - stories, antidotes and main content
  • End - Conclusion

Well structured speeches will always have these 3 sections.

Expect the middle section to be the largest as this will contain your stories, whilst the beginning and end are only a few lines each.
